EarlierversionsofAvid®Unity™MediaNetworkemployedamechanismwherebythemetadata(the
informationdescribingthelocationofallfilesstoredontheDataDriveSet)wasperiodicallywrittentothe
datadrivesthemselves.
Inordertomaximisemediaread/writeperformance,MediaNetwork5insteads avesthreeindividualcopiesof
themetadata
toaseparatepartitionontheinternalsystemdrivewhichisaredundantmirroredpairofdriv es
controlledbyahardwareRAIDcontroller.Thispartitionismountedas“AVIDO NLY”intherootoftheD:drive
asshowninFig.20below:

Foradditionaldatasecurityitmaybedesirabletotakeacopyofthesethreefilestoanexternaldeviceatthe
endofeveryday’swork.Shoulditthenhappenthatthemetadataislostthroughinternalhard‐drivefailure
(althoughpreventativemaintenanceasdescribedinCheckinternalRAIDintegrity
aboveshouldreducethis
risktopracticallyzero)nomorethanaday’sworkwouldbelost.
Inordertocopythesefiles, theFileManagerservicemustfirstbestopped.Thisnotonlyallowsaccesstothe
filesbutalsoensuresthatallmetadatainformationhasbeenwrittento
them.TheFile Managerservicemay
bestoppedandstartedeasilyfromthefirsttabofthemonitorto olasdescribedinRebootingtheMediaEngine
above.
Oncethefilemanagerservicehasbeenstopped,thefilesmaybedraggedanddroppedontoanexternal
devicesuchasaUSBflashdriveoraremotenetworklocation.

failure,please
